Mayor James Bowser, who took office on January 1, 2025, has dedicated many years to serving the people of Union with passion and commitment. His journey in public service reflects his deep-rooted dedication to the community and his drive to make Union an even better place to live.

Bowser grew up in Newark, where he attended public schools, giving him a firsthand understanding of the importance of strong, community-focused leadership. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Before moving to Union 29 years ago, he lived in Irvington with his late wife, Gail.

His path to becoming Union’s mayor began with grassroots involvement as a district leader in the township. His leadership skills quickly became evident, leading to his appointment to Union’s Planning Board, where he later became Chairman. He continued his public service by winning a seat on the Township Committee, where his commitment to the township’s future ultimately led him to his role as Mayor.

As Mayor, Bowser is dedicated to enhancing Union’s strengths, particularly its diversity, strategic location, and high-quality public services. He proudly highlights Union’s central location between the Garden State Parkway, Route 22, and Route 78, making it a highly desirable place to live. Additionally, the township benefits from well-regarded police, fire, and public works departments that remain focused on serving residents.

Bowser is especially proud of Union’s vibrant calendar of events, which includes over 30 annual activities designed to engage and bring the community together.

While he sees challenges rather than weaknesses in the community, Bowser remains focused on addressing them. Traffic congestion on major roads remains a concern, and he is committed to improving road safety through proactive measures such as traffic enforcement and infrastructure improvements. Additionally, he prioritizes public safety, supporting the township’s Special Task Force in its efforts to combat crime and maintain a secure environment for all residents.

As Mayor, James Bowser continues to work tirelessly to ensure Union remains a thriving, welcoming, and forward-moving township for generations to come.
